Now that the weather has changed, I need to plan my weekends wisely. My sister told me the latest Gazette has a list of all of the area upcoming community events this Spring/Summer. If you want to search online for local events check out the Community Calendar search on on the Gazette Web site at http://www.gazette.net/princegeorges/.
Or, or go directly to http://calendar.gazette.net/.

So evidently, I am waist deep in “the kool aid” and have unknowingly joined the Oprah cult. I am only half-joking. I’m walking around town toting the bright, orange covered book “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle — excited that I finally found the time to read an Oprah book club selection. And lo and behold…just google “oprah” and “cult” and you’ll see what I mean. Christians are attacking the “new age” philosophies from the book. I’m not going to get all religious up in here (ok, I know that was a bit urban…lol), but come to your own conclusions.
I maintain that I have a strong mind and that I am secure with my beliefs, so this book isn’t going to change that. I’ll finish the final two chapters and then I can judge fairly. There are bits and pieces that I agree may be helpful — for instance, understanding more about the ego, materialism, and the roles that we play in society. But, don’t listen to me…judge for yourself!
The “Is Oprah Starting Her Own Cult?” article is what really got me thinking…oh wait, according to the book “thought” is for suckers (lol). Okay, it doesn’t really say that. All I’m saying is, if you know me and you see me walking around town with a shaved head like Rerun from What’s Happening when he joined the cult…I welcome an intervention!

Okay, this was admittedly a self-induced hiatus. It’s what some people would call burnout. All jokes aside, a “sista” was tired. (Random pet peeve — The use of “brotha” and “sista” feels so 80s to me! Is that just me?) Well, burnout no more…it’s time to get back on track for the Spring. There is so much going on. I have really enjoyed all of the comments lately. Keep them coming!
There is so much to write about and comment on these days in our gorgeous Prince George’s County, MD. But, let me digress for a second and openly vent. How much is a gallon of milk now? It costs what to fill up my 4-door sedan? People are really starting to feel the pinch (“For Younger Generations, First Lesson In Inflation” ,Washington Post 04/13/2008). I know one thing…a recession and warm weather around the corner do not mix. Unfortunately, it’s the perfect equation for crime.
For instance, did you read the details about the bank robbery near Fairwood in Bowie, MD? Very strange (“Bank Robbery Remains Baffling”, Washington Post 04/09/2008) I know you must have heard about all the foreclosures in Perrywood. (“Suffering in Silence Over Foreclosure”, Washington Post 03/16/2008) and related forum last week. It just feels like a strange time, which I know will pass. However, this may very well be my first experience of inflation and “recession” as a working adult. Retired parents are advising their middle-aged children to start saving and cutting back….I think they know something I don’t. Should we get our coupon clipping scissors out? Should I cut back on my weekly hair appointments? Hmm…
One thing is for sure — if gas prices continue to increase something may get cut back, but it won’t be the hair.
Not yet anyway…

The Washington Post City Guide finally posted a review of Lavar Arrington’s Sideline Sports Bar on Friday (3/21) — editor’s pick. The reporter covered the play-by-play from the menu to the dress code to the “airport-style search” at the door. I have to co-sign on the crab cake review.
BTW - Has anyone checked out Game Fridays with DJ Trini or Seductive Saturdays at The Sideline yet? Any reports back on the scene? Feel free to comment here. Also, read the many comments about Sideline from readers like you. Keep them coming!

Last week, Keith A. Washington (former county Prince George’s County corporal and former former Prince George’s County homeland security official) was convicted for involutary manslaughter in the shootings of two Marlo deliverymen in his home last January. The latest news is that correctional officers found a universal handcuff key in Washinton’s shirt pocket a few days after the conviction. I guess he was planning on trying to escape?! Can you imagine? What is this Prison Break? lol (I have to give credit to State’s Attorney Glenn F. Ivey for that gem.)
This whole story from the shooting to now is just crazy. The words “above the law” come to mind…I guess only in Washington’s mind. Check the full story at “Ex-Official, Jailed in Md., Found With Handcuff Key” (Washington Post, 03/05/2008).

Looks like Sen. Hillary Clinton has defeated Sen. Barack Obama in Rhode Island, Ohio, and Texas (TX called by TV networks and Associated Press a few minutes ago). Obama picked up Vermont. There will be clarity throughout the day with the numbers game - delegates, etc. We’ll see…these are exciting times!

My heart goes out to the friends and family of those killed in the tragic accident on Saturday morning. This must be a nightmare for the driver of the Crown Victoria who hit the crowd and for those affected by the resulting deaths and serious injuries of loved ones. More information is needed at this point, but it doesn’t sounds like many people are coming forward with eyewitness accounts yet. Yes, there was an the illegal street race that was ultimately the reason for bystanders being out at that hour standing on the road. However, people lost their lives, so witnesses need to come forward.
In this subculture of illegal street racing, we have now seen the generations of race enthusiasts. But, my frustration — I just don’t understand how it’s ever okay for 13- and 15-year old children to be accompanying parents and grandparents to such dangerous and not-to-mention illegal events (at 3AM in the morning). Maybe I’m the prude? If it’s not one thing in this county, it’s another…

Finally, some semi-positive news on the crime front in Prince George’s County. I say “semi” because the numbers are still pretty bad. Carjacking went from 476 in 2007 to 338 in 2008. One is too many, in my opinion. How about striving for zero carjackings? Carjackings are down and homicides are slight up. I guess we have to pick our battles.
