Lissen Band Covers Rihanna’s Umbrella (Go-Go Version)

Maybe I’m late, but why was I walking around Annapolis Harbor last night (of all places) when I heard a car blasting a go-go version of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”. This could definitely be the go-go R&B cover of the summer, kind of like Rare Essence’s cover of Ashlee Simpson’s “Pieces of Me” a couple of years ago. Check out the Lissen YouTube video below.

FYI - I also found Suttle Thought’s “Umbrella” version along with a short low-quality clip of What? Band’s coverage.

Two Buck Chuck Still Making Headlines - Charles Shaw Chardonnay

June 29th, 2007 by PG Chic

On the ride home yesterday, I heard on WTOP that the Charles Shaw 2005 Chardonnay (also known as Two Buck Chuck) won a wine competition in a blind tasting. If you have never heard of Two Buck Chuck, then you’re missing out. I remember hearing the stories and tasting it a few years ago when it first made waves around the country. It is inexpensive wine ($1.99 per bottle in California…hence the nickname) that is exclusively sold at Trader Joe’s.

Reinventing Landover

June 28th, 2007 by PG Chic

I came across a very interesting article in the Gazette recently, “Landover revival pushes ahead - County wants to give area near Landover Mall site a makeover” (06/21/2007). I agree with County Councilman David Harrington (D-Dist. 5) of Cheverly that the area is long overdue for redevelopment. There is really nothing going on at the intersection of Landover Rd. (Route 202) and Brightseat Rd. Once the Wegmans opens in 2008, I think it just a matter of time. Hyattsville and Suitland are other areas in the process of redevelopment.

Highlights from 2007 BET Awards

In case you missed it, see below a few performances from the night.

Jennifer Holliday and Jennifer Hudson “And I Am Telling You” Duet
Great performance, but Jennifer Holliday can make some faces…lol.

Sorry, Kelly…your vocals were a little off last night. Did you peep that when Beyonce accepted her final award she thanked Kelly for being a part of HER performance. Hmm. It would have been tight if Eve went into her song “Tambourine” (with the Chuck Brown “Blow Your Whistle” sample).

Got AIDS? National HIV/AIDS Testing Day - June 27th

June 27th, 2007 by PG Chic

If you watched the red carpet show preceding the BET Awards last night, you may have seen up-and-coming actor Jimmy Jean Louis (known as The Haitian on the NBC series “Heroes”) wearing a black t-shirt with the words, “got AIDS?” Jimmy’s shirt reminded me that today is National HIV/AIDS Testing Day. In 2004, HIV infection was the number one cause of death for African American women ages 25-34. PG Chic encourages you to get tested to know your status.

Start Your Own Dining Club

June 26th, 2007 by PG Chic

A friend of mine recently told me about an article in the latest Essence issue about Starting a Dining Club. I think it’s a great idea! Starting a dining club offers the opportunity to try out all of the great restaurants that you hear about, but never have a chance to actually go to. The dining club highlighted in the article has never repeated a restaurant, except for Sunday brunch. They meet once a month on third Fridays. There are a few rules that the group follows, including splitting the bill evenly (except drinks), bringing cash, and alternating hostesses.

Please let me know if any of you would be interested in joining a PG Chic Dining Club in the comments area below or by e-mail to info@pgchic.com.

Bad Customer Service in Prince George’s County?

Email To Friend Email To Friend

June 25th, 2007 by PG Chic

Finally! Acknowledgement to what I have experienced for years at SOME restaurants and other establishments in Prince George’s County. Read the recent Washington Post article, “In Pr. George’s, Learning to Put Smile in ‘Service With a Smile’” about improving “shoddy customer service” in the county. Not to say I have not had bad customer service in Montgomery County or Washington, DC…I have. My bad customer service experiences are one reason I created the Mystery Shopper category on this site. Customer service and genuine hospitality really make a difference. However, it can only get better if you complain. Don’t just accept bad customer service as the norm. I have had my share of conversations with managers and, yes, I am a letter writer…lol.

Feel free to share your horrid customer service experiences. Stay tuned for more Mystery Shopper posts!

You can always tell when I’m catching up on videos. Check out the new R. Kelly and Usher “Same Girl” video with a twist at the end. The “twist” doesn’t really make sense, but maybe I’m analyzing it too much. Anyway, see for yourself…

Now That’s Hot: Apple iPhone in Stores on June 29th

June 22nd, 2007 by PG Chic

Eight days and counting until the long-awaited release of the Apple iPhone. I know I was up on the Blackberry Curve last month, but I can’t help but take notice of the Apple iPhone.

Apple iPhone

Where can you get an Apple iPhone in the Washington DC area? I checked. Sidenote—Why do I not find it surprising that there is not one Apple store in all of Prince George’s County, MD? Can we get an Apple Store? Well, we don’t have a CompUSA (sorry Tavis) so I guess an Apple store would be pushing it. Anyway, you should be able to get the Apple iPhone from AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular Wireless) when it arrives in stores on June 29th.

Latest Fad of Declaring E-mail Bankruptcy

Email To Friend Email To Friend

June 22nd, 2007 by PG Chic

Today, as I sifted through my hundreds of e-mail messages in my work inbox, I also realized that the messages in my personal Yahoo! account had reached over 4,000 (ludicrous…I‘ve been meaning to clean that up!) Those realizations made me remember reading an article in the Washington Post last month, “E-Mail Reply to All: ‘Leave Me Alone’”. Basically, people are declaring e-mail bankruptcy.

Imagine deleting all of your old messages and sending a message to everyone in your address book saying that you are starting over and in case you missed something important, please re-send the message. Well, I am getting to that point…at least for personal messages. At work, I use my inbox as my “to-do” list, which is probably not a good idea since I will never finish it all. I suppose I would get fired if I decided to declare e-mail bankruptcy at work…lol. My only question: Will this affect my e-mail “credit” for seven years? :)
