The vacant seat on the Prince George’s County, MD Board of Education is close to being filled. This comes after twenty-sex year old Nathaniel B. Thomas resigned the position, after being indicted for an alleged sexual relationship with an under-aged boy. The newly nominated board member, activist Amber Waller, was chosen out of 39 candidates by County Executive Jack Johnson. Lace Front Wigs: The RuPaul Connection

July 30th, 2007 by PG Chic

Some say that RuPaul made lace front wigs popular in the 90s. Well, in his own words (from a 2002 blog entry on his Web site) RuPaul wears custom made synthetic lace front wigs and he prefers synthetic over human hair because it holds a hairstyle longer. In addition, he references the Go Hairdressers Club Web site as a place to search for lace front wig makers in your area. You better work!

Okay, I don’t agree with the words of the song and the video is typical, but I’m a sucker for a Dr. Dre beat. Listen to the instrumental below.

A Hot Ghetto Flop - BET’s “We Got To Do Better” (previously called “Hot Ghetto Mess”)

Email To Friend Email To Friend

July 25th, 2007 by PG Chic

I really think BET must have changed the original “Hot Ghetto Mess” show. It looked thrown together and disjointed. Overall, the show was lame and the jokes were stale. Charlie Murphy was stiff and I could tell some of the clips were changes because Charlie’s comments didn’t totally match up with the clips. Regardless, it looks like the WhatAboutOurDaughters blog really had an impact on stopping sponsors from being associated with the show. Locally, the only non-BET ads (and other than the trailer for “Who’s Your Caddy?”) were (1) Jim Coleman Toyota (http://www.jimcolemantoyota.com) - Bethesda, MD and (2) Law Cash (never heard of it). Check out excellent coverage from the WhatAboutOurDaughters Blog.

In related news, I heard that the Web site HotGhettoMess.com has toned down its content. However, I just checked and there are still very disturbing pictures in the “Just Sad” section showing babies with beer and liquor. Sickening! Can we say child endangerment? And BET is associated with this tomfoolery? Hmm.

Side Note — My vote was almost cast for BET having the WORSE WEEK EVER, until I saw the clip of Beyonce falling down stairs at her concert last night. Dag, B! She got right back up and kept performing without hesitating though. I think it’s karma…remember seeing the clip a couple of years ago when Michelle fell and Kelly and Beyonce looked down and kept performing?

Is the BMW 745i the next Mercedes E-Class for Black Female Professionals?

Email To Friend Email To Friend

July 24th, 2007 by PG Chic

Is the BMW 745i the next Mercedes E-Class? What do I mean? Remember a few years back when it seemed like every Black female professional you knew in the Washington DC area had a Mercedes E-Class? (Never the C-class…we learned quickly that the “C” stands for “cheap” right? lol). Anyway, these days everywhere I look, African American women in the area are profiling in the sporty BMW 745i. Really, I see at least three or four a day in Prince George’s County, MD and the driver always seems to be a Black female. Not to be out done, I saw a woman leaving my neighborhood a few days ago with the new 2007 BMW 750i, so I guess the 745i is old news. :)

BMW 750i

If you’re into cars, I have heard that Mercedes has really gone down hill in terms of quality, maintenance service agreement, etc. However, if you’re in the market for a Mercedes, your best bet is the S-Class in terms of reliability. Sorry, no sources…just hearsay from a friend of a friend and talk at the hair salon. Yes, women talk about cars too! In comparison, BMW still offers a competitive service agreement/warranty that covers regular maintenance (like oil changes) for a period of time or up to a specific mileage. I also overheard (yes, that’s eavesdropping…lol) a guy telling my mechanic that Passport BMW (yes, the one on Auth Way in Marlow Heights, MD) has the top sales of BMW dealerships on the East Coast. I’m not sure if that is true or not, but it’s interesting enough to share.

If you’re wondering, the BMW 750i starts at $75,800. So, if you’re interested in keeping up with the Jones or if you are actually a BMW lover of the ultimate driving experience, this is my public service announcement that BMWs have become the Mercedes of yesteryear in our beloved Prince George’s County, MD. Honestly, I think it’s time for an update to my previous post, “America’s Wealthiest Black County - Prince George’s County, MD”…maybe I’ll call it something like “Have We Really Arrived?” and focus on creating generational wealth, improving our school system, and dealing with crime issues, instead of buying cars for $70K+ and mini-mansions for close to a million dollars. Okay, off soap box…

And now for the major hypocrisy. Since I am a product of gorgeous Prince George’s County, MD it’s hard not to fold to the peer pressure. Going to get my BMW 750i this weekend…just kidding. I wish. :)

Plans to Boycott BET’s Upcoming “Hot Ghetto Mess” Show - Part 2

Email To Friend Email To Friend

July 23rd, 2007 by PG Chic

This post is an update from my July 16, 2007 post on the “Hot Ghetto Mess” show. The latest from BET is that they will change the name of the their ridiculous show from “Hot Ghetto Mess” to “We Got To Do Better” removing some of the ties from the tasteless HotGhettoMess.com Web site created by Washingtonian Jam Donaldson in 2004. The show will still premiere on Wednesday, but all eyes will be on what sponsors are actually going to associate their names with this foolishness.

The WhatAboutOurDaughters blogger, BET’s most vocal critic, had a lot to do with the recent turn of events. Read today’s post “‘Hot Ghetto Mess’ is Hot Ghetto GONE” — great job WhatAboutOurDaughters!

Video: Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls”

July 21st, 2007 by PG Chic

As always, catching up on videos this weekend, I caught the video for the infectious tune “Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston. Of course, I liked it better when it was called, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King…lol. My parents probably find the spin on this 1961 tune blasphemous :), but either way it’s a catchy update to a old classic.

Martin Lawrence’s “Martin” Coming to Theaters in 2009?

Email To Friend Email To Friend

July 19th, 2007 by PG Chic

When I heard that there may be a “Martin” movie with the entire cast, of course my first thought was if Gina (sorry, Tisha Campbell) would be included. Word on the street is that she will be involved with the project. Of course, all of this could be a rumor. Either way, I have to give props to Martin Lawrence because he grew up in Prince George’s County, MD. He’s from Landover, MD, right? Specifically, I remember hearing Dodge Park? lol (not sure if that’s true)

I remember going to a talent show that he hosted at his alma mater Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD. This was during the Def Comedy years and before Martin really blew up. That was when Martin Lawrence was unstoppable. I would love to see some of his classic stand-up. I remember being pressed to see a blurry copy of “You So Crazy!” on my campus…Craig, Earl, and them. I’m sorry Martin, I admit to going to see Big Momma’s House in the theater, but I had to pass on the sequel. However, Martin gave us winner lines (sense the sarcasm) like “You Go, Girl!” that my counterparts use to congratulate me at work now. Thanks, Martin…lol. (Side–But seriously, maybe it’s just me, but when is the last time a co-worker said to you, “You Go, Girl!” or called you “Girlfriend”? Major pet peeve! I am not your girlfriend and definitely not your girl. That really gets under my skin.)

Anyway, like it or not, Martin lines are still being using 15 years later and are officially a part of 90’s pop culture. I can’t really envision how the movie will be set-up, but I am sure all of the Martin characters (Shanaynay, Jerome, Roscoe, Martin’s mother, etc.) will have a chance to shine. I don’t need to see “brother man from the fifth floor” though…lol. I’ll post any new information if I hear anything else.
