UPDATED (07/23/2007): See Plans to Boycott BET’s Upcoming “Hot Ghetto Mess” Show - Part 2
I stumbled upon the Web site HotGhettoMess.com a couple of months ago. It reminded me of the many e-mail forwards that we receive like photos of the ghetto fabulous wedding, outrageous prom attire, and the list goes on. However, when I first heard that there would be a show on BET with the same theme, I cringed. If this show airs, the joke will be on all of us. A lot of people think that BET speaks for all African Americans and the message will be that it is okay. Even if there are a subset of people within our community that are highlighted on the show, the message will be that all of us behave this way.
The blog “What About Our Daughters” has done a wonderful job with commentary and action items for what you can do. State Farm Insurance and Home Depot have already pulled their ads from the show. It will be interesting to see (if the show ever airs) which corporate sponsors actually are willing to put their name on this foolishness.

I hear that, JB. I found a letter that I wrote and mailed to BET when I was in high school—funny it was returned to sender without being opened. Anyway, this was when BET was just BET (not Viacom) and it was headquartered in Washington DC. Although the programming was a little better back then, my letter complained of all the infomercials and other issues that I had at the time with the lack of creative programming. The point…no station can (or should) fully represent an entire race. The problem is that there are “others” out there who think BET represents us all. Wrong!
