As you know, because of the Michael Vick dogfighting controversy, the dark world of dogfighting has been highlighted in mainstream media. I even heard recently that DMX was under suspicion of cruelty to animals potentially related to dogfighting. Locally, a Suitland High School graduate Bobby J. Brown has received recent attention from a 2005 documentary that he created over a 14 year period exposing the underground world of dogfighting. The Washington Post had an interesting article about the documentary earlier this week, “A Documentary With a New Bite - Dogfighting Scandal Brings Attention to Local Filmmaker’s 2005 Work on a Cruel Sport” (Washington Post, 08/28/2007).

When am I going to get my “big girl” car (as one of my girlfriends calls it)? I am still putzing around in my just-out-of-college compact…and it’s been more than a few years. I enjoy not having a car payment and the gas mileage of a compact, but I think my ride needs to be upgraded to “big girl” status. What does that mean for the Washington DC metropolitan area? It could mean that I look for a sensible, economical, gas-friendly sedan with low maintenance. Or, I could join the drones and get a luxury sedan or SUV.
The luxury SUV option is tempting (and I am sure will be liberating in a sense), but I battle the Beltway everyday with a long commute so good gas mileage is key. I am sure there are others out there with my same frivolous dilemma, which really amounts to the question, “To Be Bourgy or Not to Be” — that’s the real question. In my quest to make a decision, I recently came across the Essence article, “Black Woman’s Wealth Plan” in the September 2007 issue, which contained lots of great advise about creating wealth. I’m not sure getting a luxury car is part of that wealth plan, but I’ll blog about my decision when I get to the point.

I have been a fan of Red Bull energy drink since it came out a few years back. However, Red Bull has taken a back seat to my new energy fix Zipfizz. I randomly tried it a couple of weeks ago one sluggish afternoon at work in a nearby convenience store. I went in for Red Bull and left with Zipfizz Liquid Shot Energy Supplement. After I drank it, I read the label and realized that this product has 41,667% of Vitamin B12 daily value. No, that’s not a misprint, 41,667%! I read a few Zipfizz testimonials online (as well as their FAQs) and a few people said they think that’s the most B12 you could get from an energy drink, aside from getting more from a B12 injection. (Unrelated — I’ll have to write about the Gupta/B12 “diet plan” at some point in the near future.)
Anyway, as suspected, college students are all over Zipfizz (a.k.a. “B12 Crack”). It has caffeine in it, but minimal, and it doesn’t give you the coffee jitters. Try it if you need a boost for around 4-6 hours. (Not an endorsement, just my experience.) I’m already orchestrating getting a friend with a Costco membership to hook me up with a 24-pack box of Zipfizz!

There were several rallies across the country yesterday marking the 1963 anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “March on Washington” and the 1955 murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi. In the Washington DC Metropolitan area, many local politicians supported a rally against the Realco gun shop in District Heights,MD because of hundreds of guns purchased at the store being linked to multiple crimes in Maryland and Washington DC. Check out the Washington Post article, “Protesters Target Md. Store That Sold Guns Tied to Crimes” about the protests.

You may have heard a few months back about the investigation into the Lanham-based Metropolitan Money Store Corp.’s role in the supposed largest mortgage/foreclosure scandal in Maryland history. Joy Jenise Jackson was the owner and when the story broke, several of my friends remembered clearly the radio commercials that played frequently on area stations, “Tell ‘em Joyce sent ya” or something to that effect.
Anyway, in Sunday’s Washington Post there were a lot more details about the Metropolitan Money Store investigation and Jackson’s extravagant lifestyle, including her $800,000 wedding that included a mini-concert by Patti Labelle. It was interesting to read that she used to perform at The Legends Nightclub (late 90’s to early 2000’s) under the exotic dancer name Night Rider. All I can say is, I guess she didn’t take LisaRaye’s advice to heart from The Player’s Club. “Make that money girl, don’t let it make you” …lol.

A while back Essence magazine featured an article, “Blame it On Rio - My (Uncensored) Brazil Travel Diary” by William Jelani Cobb. Sorry husbands, boyfriends, and sigificant others…the secret is out. Good luck planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro with your buddies now! We’re hip to the potential trysts with Brazilian ladies of the evening. Check out the Essence “Blame it On Rio” article if you missed it and see the related links below on Cobb’s expose of African American men’s “vacations” to Brazil.

So, I’m listening to the radio a few days ago and hear a song called “Crank That” by Soulja Boy, which based on the lyrics has a dance associated with it. First of all, if you’re over 25 (myself included), you probably have no business trying to do this complicated dance. However, I was curious about how the Soulja Boy dance looked so I Googled it. At least I won’t be caught off guard if this song is played the next time I make it to the club (so I can get out of the way)…lol.
Just for your viewing pleasure, check out the instructional video below (they look so serious!) and the music video. What happened to the snake and the wop? LOL. Let me find out this is the 2007 Electric Slide. Learn it, know it…just kidding. (Note: This dance has no barriers…check out these three girls “cranking that soulja boy”…hilarious.)
Unrelated - Soulja Boy’s accent is so country, but cute…lol.

Just a quick follow-up to The Secret…I wrote about the DVD back in April 2007 - The Secret. If you are into the law of attraction and remember seeing Lisa Nichols on Oprah with her vision board, check out this Web site called My Master Board that helps you create an electronic vision board. I have not tried this service, but I am just sharing. Of course, you can be like a third grader and get some magazines, scissors, and poster board and do the same…lol. Either way, I think vision boards can be powerful tools in envisioning success for your future.

Last month, I wrote about B. Smith’s Chef Rahman “Rock” Harper and sure enough, he was the winner last week on Fox’s reality show, Hell’s Kitchen. If he’s still around, now would be the time to go to B. Smith’s before he leaves for his new job in Las Vegas at the Green Valley Ranch and Resort.

Okay, so I never said I was going on vacation and I had every intention of writing last week, but lazy days on the beach far away from the Washington DC area got the best of me! Stay tuned for more daily posts! I have so much to cover in the coming weeks.
Summer is almost over. I can’t believe that the Prince George’s County school system started already today.
