September 29th, 2007 by PG Chic

Just wondering if anyone else caught the “Chevy Chic” ads promoting the new Bloomingdale’s in Chevy Chase,MD? The department store, which opened on 9/27 is the third Bloomingdale’s in the area (joining Tyson’s and White Flint) and the 40th store overall. It is located at 5300 Western Avenue and replaces the old Hecht’s.

Worship Goes Big-Screen and Hi-Fi, With Direct-Deposit Tithing

The Washington Post article, “Worship Goes Big-Screen and Hi-Fi, With Direct-Deposit Tithing - Technology Raises Fears of a Lost Reverence” was an interesting look into technology and the church. A few area churches were referenced, including First Baptist Church of Glenarden (new facility) and Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington. (Speaking of FBCG, did anyone else get caught in the related church traffic on opening day?)

Woodmore Project Approved

September 27th, 2007 by PG Chic

Just a quick follow-up to Monday’s posting on the Wegmans deal — over 200 people sent letters to council members. The result? The council rejected the appeal by Anthony Perez which will allow for the groundbreaking of the Woodmore Towne Centre at Glenarden to continue as planned (before the end of the year).

Along with Wegmans, I didn’t realize that the other anchor store is supposed to be a Costco. Read more in the Washington Post’s article, “Woodmore Project Approved - Council Rejects Opposition; Towne Centre to Get Underway Soon” (Washington Post, 9/27/2007).

Just sharing a quick update about the Metropolitan Money Store foreclosure scandal involving Joy Jenise Jackson and Kurt Fordham…

District Sues Md. Mortgage Business (Washington Post, 09/02/2007)

BTW - When the Joy Jenise Jackson Metropolitan Money Store story first broke, I had heard that the scandal made the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. I missed it, but recently found the video on the CBS Web site–

Technology: Rotten Neighbor Web Site - Locate Bad Neighbors Before You Move

Email To Friend Email To Friend

September 26th, 2007 by PG Chic

Rotten Neighbors Web Site Screenshot
I found an interesting Web site today called Rotten Neighbors which is a Google map mashup that allows you to search for “rotten neighbors” by zip code and/or contribute your own comments to the map. I did a couple of searches in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. Many of the comments appear to be useful, but I was literally laughing out loud (LOL) at some of the contributions.

If the Rotten Neighbors Web site owners can stay on top of vandals posting irrelevant contributions, then I think this could be a great resource for home buyers. Rotten Neighbors will only be as good as the truthfulness of the people providing the contributions to the map. It was interesting to see that there were a few entries highlighting good neighbors too.

Check out a few snippets of contributions from the Rotten Neighbor Web site below –

Where are the Parents?
“Has children that have friends that like to break into neighbors cars.”

I’m a bad neighbor!
“I am an awful neighbor, don’t move near me!”

disrespectful renter in the basement
“LOUD, FOUL mouthed renter in the basement even though it is against HOA bylaws…”

Momma has not cut the cords!
“Here is a family that is interesting. The two 35+ year old kids still live with their parents…”

Ghetto
“They hold loud conversations at 3am in front of the house with cars running…. run dont walk. Sorry I moved here cant wait to move away!”

I love Kohl’s, so I was excited to hear about the new Simply Vera line by Vera Wang exclusively for Kohl’s. Oprah even got in on the promo on her show “Exclusive: Simply Vera Vera Wang” and “Behind the Scenes: Vera Wang For Kohl’s” in the September 2007 issues of O, The Oprah Magazine.

No Surprise…Kanye West is the Winner - Check Out “Good Life” and “Big Brother”

Email To Friend Email To Friend

September 22nd, 2007 by PG Chic

I haven’t mentioned the outcome of the 50 Cent vs. Kanye West first-week-sales-battle (also known as big marketing stunt)…if you heard about it. Both hip-hop artists released albums on 9/11/07 and (as if there was any real competition) Kanye sold almost 1 million albums in the first week, beating 50 Cent’s album sales of around 500,000. During the months leading up to the album release date, 50 Cent said he would retire if Kanye outsold him. Please do…I hope he keeps his word! (lol) 50 just can’t compete lyrically or otherwise…sorry Boo.

See below some of my favs so far from Kanye’s Graduation (2007)… (other than “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”)

Enough is Enough! Campaign (Clinton,MD) - Weekend Rallies at BET Executive’s Home

September 21st, 2007 by PG Chic

Did you hear about this? Clinton-based organization, Citizen’s for Change, Inc., organized a rally of more than 500 people and protested peacefully in front of BET CEO Debra Lee’s home on September 15th. The organization will continue to do so every weekend until Lee agrees to address the group’s concerns, which include goals to combat negative African American images in the media. I happened to see some coverage of one of the rallies on the local news last night.

Jena 6 Rally and Protest - Did you wear black?

Email To Friend Email To Friend

September 20th, 2007 by PG Chic

Hopefully, you got the memo. I was encouraged today to see unity in the amount of people who wore black in support of the Jena 6. From talking to co-workers dressed in black who “got the memo” to seeing familiar (and non-familiar) supporters in my building to giving a knowing nod to strangers dressed in black on the street…there was a sense of camaraderie that I have not felt in years.

I tuned in for the evening news and saw that the Jena 6 rally in Louisiana (and other locations across the country) made the top headline on most broadcasts. A young man being interviewed said it best. The Free Jena 6 movement leading up to the rally and protest feels like the beginning of something larger…
