Mystery Shopper: Peculiar Ladies Dress Shop at The Blvd. in Largo, MD

November 29th, 2007 by PG Chic

I hadn’t been to The Blvd. in a while and just discovered a new store near Nine West and Ann Taylor Loft called Peculiar Ladies Dress Shop. The staff was friendly and helpful. Also, the selection of dress styles (and other clothing) was current. I will definitely return especially when I am looking for unique evening wear. I am deciding on what to do for New Year’s Eve now. (The Inner Causus Gala is always fun.) Anway, I’m sure I will be able to find a suitable dress at Peculiar Ladies Dress Shop for the event.

Prince George’s Makes Sales Pitch For High-End Retail

Email To Friend Email To Friend

November 28th, 2007 by PG Chic

I came across a Washington Post article, “Prince George’s Makes Sales Pitch For High-End Retail” (06/01/05) recently that I have to share. Although this article is a couple of years old, this is an interesting look into the continuing push to get more high-end retail in Prince George’s County, MD.

Why doesn’t Prince George’s County have more high-end retail? Well, the article references limited commercial zoning in sought after (by developers) Bowie and Laurel. For “other” areas (you know where they’re talking about), less than ideal demographics are cited as reasons that developers would not want to take a chance on higher retail. Of course, race is always the underlying reason that many point to. Either way, two and a half years have passed since this Washington Post article and while the projects listed (including the National Harbor and the Woodmore Towne Center) are still in development…we want, need, and deserve more!

Side - On my search for Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin last weekend, I went to the new Sephora at Annapolis Mall. I was disappointed that the Westfield Annapolis Sephora did not have Rx for Brwon Skin. More disappointing was that they did not sell Carol’s Daughter either. The sales reps showed me another product that was an arm and a leg, but I passed. My heart was set on Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin. I should have know. I am going back to my plan to buy the products online.

Foiled Again by Giant Food’s Peapod - Not Available

November 19th, 2007 by PG Chic

One day last week, when I opened my mail I could hardly keep from bursting at the seams when I saw a flyer from Giant Food advertising the Peapod food delivery service. Many of you have this service, but there are areas in Prince George’s that seem to have been skipped. So, the first thing I did was go online to put in my zip code. Lo and behold, I get the same message that I have been getting for the past 3 years –

“We’re sorry, the Peapod grocery delivery service has not yet reached your area. Please enter your e-mail address so we may contact you when service is available in your area.”

I need to get to the bottom of this. I hope that the Web site is just not updated yet. Who has time to go grocery shoping? Not me…this is why Giant’s Peapod will make life easier for me. I’ll find out more.

Random Observation: “Ghetto or Bourgie” - A Panel Discussion on November 16th at PGCC

Email To Friend Email To Friend

November 12th, 2007 by PG Chic

“Ghetto or Bourgie - A Panel Discussion on November 16th” was what I saw on the sign in front of Prince George’s Community College last Thursday evening (11/8). I hadn’t noticed the sign before and from the title it looked like the forum was “keepin’ it real” to get a reaction. I immediately called my sister, not to complain, but to ask her if she’d be able to attend. I tried to take a quick camera phone pic, but of course the traffic light changed.

So, the next morning, I had phone in hand ready to take a picture of the sign to post on PG Chic to give “free” publicity for this discussion. And lo and behold, the sign had been changed to “Class in the African American Community - A Panel Discussion” still November 16th. Someone must have complained about the first sign. Maybe that was a case of “keepin’ it real” gone wrong (sorry…I couldn’t resist the Chappelle Show reference).

Personally, the first “Ghetto or Bourgie” sign was more intriguing and I think would have increased turnout. Okay, so the event hasn’t happened yet…maybe the turnout will still be good. Part of the discussion should cover the decision to change the sign and title of the discussion. Maybe “class” has a little something to do with that. Just my two cents… :)

BTW - I can’t find anything about this discussion on the PGCC Web site. However, the number on the sign is 301-322-0800.

Check out this interesting article from today’s Washington Post about the Donna Edwards / Sen. Albert Wynn race, “Challenger to Wynn Hopes For Edge From Internet Buzz”, which talks about the Internet buzz on liberal blogs and the amount of money that challenger Donna Edwards has raised online in response to that buzz.

Dr. Susan C. Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin at Sephora

November 9th, 2007 by PG Chic

When I make my rounds to Sephora, I always pick up a Carol’s Daughter product (gotta’ love Almond Cookie). Now I also can pick up from Sephora - Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin (debuted at Sephora September 2007). I heard Dr. Taylor on the Steve Harvey Morning Show answering basic demotology questions. Based in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Taylor is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and author of the 2004 book Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails.

You can pre-order her new book (to be released January 2, 2008) here: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin: Your Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails.

Dr. Susan Taylor's Rx for Brown Skin

I am in the process of switching my basic skin care products and will try Dr. Taylor’s skin care regimen next—Bright and Healthy, Bright and Clear, or Bright and Even. There is a skin survey on the Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin Web site that helps select which regiment to follow. I will try the Bright and Health skin regimen for a couple of weeks and report back!

Side note — I have to mention, of course, there is no Sephora in Prince George’s County, MD (in Maryland just Annapolis (Anne Arundel), Bethesda (Montgomery), and Columbia (Howard); for DC just one in Georgetown; and three in Northern Virginia). Maybe I’ll start buying my products online exclusively. As much money as I spend at the Sephora in Montgomery Mall…hmm.
