When I make my rounds to Sephora, I always pick up a Carol’s Daughter product (gotta’ love Almond Cookie). Now I also can pick up from Sephora - Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin (debuted at Sephora September 2007). I heard Dr. Taylor on the Steve Harvey Morning Show answering basic demotology questions. Based in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Taylor is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and author of the 2004 book Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails.

You can pre-order her new book (to be released January 2, 2008) here: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin: Your Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails.

Dr. Susan Taylor's Rx for Brown Skin

I am in the process of switching my basic skin care products and will try Dr. Taylor’s skin care regimen next—Bright and Healthy, Bright and Clear, or Bright and Even. There is a skin survey on the Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin Web site that helps select which regiment to follow. I will try the Bright and Health skin regimen for a couple of weeks and report back!

Side note — I have to mention, of course, there is no Sephora in Prince George’s County, MD (in Maryland just Annapolis (Anne Arundel), Bethesda (Montgomery), and Columbia (Howard); for DC just one in Georgetown; and three in Northern Virginia). Maybe I’ll start buying my products online exclusively. As much money as I spend at the Sephora in Montgomery Mall…hmm.

    Hi,

I’m thinking about purchasing one of Dr Susan’s line and I was wondering if you would recommend any of the products

    Naike,
Your timing is impeccable! I was gearing up to report back on my experience with the Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin products this week. I have been using the Bright and Healthy skin regimen for about six weeks. My skin is clear and radiant, but I honestly don’t really have issues with my skin and I do not breakout easily, so I may not be a good gauge. I will say that I like the moisturizer the best. The consistency and texture of the cleanser could be improved…it’s a bit slimy and doesn’t spready evenly when applied. The cleanser also does not give me much of a lather, which may be okay…maybe it’s designed that way for a purpose. Also, I wish the packaging was better for the toner, which is in a spray bottle. I spray a cotton ball to apply my toner and I feel like it takes too many sprays to semi-saturate the cotton ball enough to really apply the toner well. Maybe by cotton balls are too absorbent! Anyway, I hope this helps! Overall, I am not doing flips over this product, but I’m not disappointed either.

Thanks for the review! My skin doesn’t breakout either I just want it to be more radiant and I’ve heard a lot about Rx for Brown Skin so I thought I’d give it a try. I think that the problems you had with the texture of the products we’re probably due to the fact that they don’t linked the usual chemicals used to create lather because they irritate brown skin….Do you think you’re going to buy any of these products again?

  4. PG Chic Says:

Yes, I will give the products a try again. I actually have quite a bit left of the basic care (cleanser, toner, moisturizer). One good thing is that just a few pumps of the cleanser and moisturizer go a long way. I agree that I may have been used to other products not designed for my skin that lather. My skin feels hydrated by the products and not dry or tight.

I’m currently using the bright and healthy line and I have the same complaint about the cleanser. I just pump twice and add a light drizzle of water to my fingertips and rub on my dry face, it gives a decent lather that way. Also, I use Shisheido cotton squares for the toner, they soak up less product. You can also get these at Sephora. I agree, the moisturizer is absolutely the best! Sometimes I interchange with Bright and Clear toner or cleanser to keep acne flare ups at bay. HTH!

  6. boyfriend of user Says:

I am the boyfriend of a user. She used to use ProActive, but stopped to try these products geared for black people’s skin. Let me tell you, the texture of her skin started to change….she started getting all of these fine bumps under her jaw line. Also, her face got very ruff, but it was not before. Honestly, she does have nice skin, every once and a while she might get a little bump or something on her face… but now, when I look at her face I want to cry or beat up whoever suggested it to her (not really, but its tempting). But its that she has huge puss filled bumps on her face. And she says that it is painful. She has since had to schedule appointment with her Dermatologist and she has gone back to Proactive. good luck to the rest of you - she will never use this stuff again.
