Have you heard that Evite has a free new service called QuickVite for mobile phones? The Evite Web site says, “[Quickvite is a]…fast, easy way to coordinate last-minute get-togethers with your friends. Guests can receive QuickVite as email or text message…[and] can reply in 3 different ways. Guests can reply yes/no to the text message or click the link to respond to see who’s coming, and add a message before replying. QuickVite Evite Mobile looks like a great service that I am sure I will be using in the near future!

There was coverage on NBC Nightly News recently that included interviews of some victims of the alleged scam who are in danger of losing their homes, video footage of the Joy Jenise Jackson wedding, and among other things a photo of Ms. Jackson during her exotic dancer “Night Rider” days. Word on the street is that she is no where to be found…not sure if that’s true. The FBI is investigating the case, but charges have not been filed yet.

You always tell when I’m catching up on videos on VH1 Soul. So, I am into Chrisette Michele now. You may remember her from the hook on Jay-Z’s “Lost Ones” from his Kingdom Come album. Check out the video for “Be OK” –

The Gazette has an interesting article about the African American Santa at Prince George’s Plaza. The mall has had a Black Santa since 2003 and evidently people travel for miles to visit. Read the article, “Some Parents Seek Out a Black Santa” (Gazette, 12/13/2007).

If you haven’t already, consider donating to the Washington D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Monument Campaign. I heard a representative from the “Build the Dream” Campaign on the radio this week and it sounds like $80 million has been raised so far with a total goal of $100 million

If you grew up in the Washington DC area, you should remember the go-go pool party scandal exposed on channel 7 ABC/WJLA news by Del Walters with the I-Team. I have to share the thought process that resulted in this completely random memory today. For some reason, the name “Trina Boo” came up in conversation with a friend…and Karrine Steffens was mentioned shortly thereafter (I’ll let other area bloggers fill you in on “Trina Boo” and other infamous go-go dancers), which brought up late 80’s and 90’s go-go and reminded me of the Northeast Groovers and Rare Essence pool party scandals.
I remember seeing the 1994 Del Walters news coverage of this story. I also remember that Del was on Oprah talking about the scandal. Del should come back to do a “Where are they now?” special report…lol. I can’t believe that was nearly 15 years ago. It has only gotten worse with many mainstream music videos being just as demeaning. Anyway, the story was interesting back then and still is to a certain extent. Someone actually posted the original news coverage from channel 7 on YouTube. Check it out and watch comments from the late C. Delores Tucker during the broadcast about the go-go pool party scandal.

Surprisingly, after months of blogging I have not mentioned Linganore Winecellars and Berrywine Plantations previously. The Linganore Vineyard is located in Mt. Airy, MD. I first went to Linganore during a Wine Festival where I discovered two of their semi-sweet grape wines Skipjack and Mountain White. Both are delicious wines if you enjoy a sweet wines. Their fruit wines are good too…Raspberry and Peach come to mind.
After independently discovering Skipjack as my favorite, I realized that there are quite a few Skipjack fans in the area. Linganore wines are available at several wine stores throughout Maryland, including Prince George’s County — see the Wine Finder to find retailers and restaurants. According to the Linganore Wine Finder, it looks like both Stonefish Grill and Gladys Knight and Ron Winan’s Chicken and Waffles serve Linganore wines. I have learned to buy early near holidays because Linganore wines, especially Skipjack, sells out often.
Since I’m talking about wine, I should also mention other favorites. Schmitt-Sohne Riesling is also a tasty dessert wine. White Merlot is a good blush for summer, similar to White Zinfandel, but generally not as sweet. As you can tell, dry white wines are not my favorite, but a Pinot Grigio is doable. If you’re into dry wines, I always hear good things about Yellowtail Chardonnay, but it’s too dry for my taste buds.
