3 Dead After Super Bowl Shooting at Pizzeria Uno - Largo, MD

Okay, I’m feeling like Florida Evans when James died on Good Times…expletive, expletive, expletive! I am sick and tired of senseless crime like the Super Bowl shooting and killing of three people at the Pizzeria Uno Chicago Grill at The Blvd. at Captial Centre in Largo, MD. When is this foolishness going to end? I was floored when I heard about this incident on the drive into work this morning. I first heard part of the headline “shooting at a Largo bar”, which was enough to get my attention because that is not a typical occurence. I was more shocked to hear that it was Uno’s.

Can we have anything without somebody messing it up for everyone? I think Chris Rock said it best in “Bring the Pain” (1996) — “grand opening, grand closing” — with his controversial description of two types of “our” people. Agree or disagree, he had a point. “What is it with some of us who have no respect for community?” (Native Son, 02/04/2008). Now you see why certain high-end retailers don’t trust Prince George’s County. You build something nice, then something like this happens. One question that one of my girlfriends posed is where are our leaders? Unless I missed it, I haven’t heard any statements from any P.G. official about this incident. The message is clear to me. We can do all the economic development and building we want. However, if the so-called wealthiest African American county cannot get their crime issue under control, then what’s the point?

The Blvd. had a lot of energy when it first opened. People were excited about the higher-end stores that we typically did not have in the county. I found the following interesting tidbit from the Washington Post about The Blvd. project when it was in development –

“Before the center opened, residents exacted pledges from the developer that they hoped would ensure a family-friendly atmosphere. They wanted to limit the number of athletic-shoe stores, T-shirt shops, cellphone stores and other types of businesses that generally attract young people, many of them loiterers with little or no money to spend.” (Washington Post, 02/05/2008)

What happened to that pledge? The main strip leading up to the Magic Johnson theater at The Blvd. is just that….athletic stores, cellphone stores, and loiterers. When I go to The Blvd., my stops are typically Borders, Linen N’ Things, Ann Taylor Loft, and occasionally Circuit City (if I want to battle the Golden Corral traffic…that’s a whole other story). I usually go during the day, but I have also picked up dinner at Bugaboo Creek Steak House on occassion after dark. This triple-shooting is scary because it happened in a crowded restaurant. Anyone could have been shot in the crossfire at — of all places — the family-friendly Pizzeria Uno. Overall, I am really disappointed and saddened by this tragedy.

I think the main problem with the Blvd. is having the Metro in walking distance. Not to mention that Metro runs til 2:00 a.m. on Friday & Saturday nights! The bottom line is that PARENTS need to start PARENTING their children, long BEFORE they become TEENS!
