When am I going to get my “big girl” car (as one of my girlfriends calls it)? I am still putzing around in my just-out-of-college compact…and it’s been more than a few years. I enjoy not having a car payment and the gas mileage of a compact, but I think my ride needs to be upgraded to “big girl” status. What does that mean for the Washington DC metropolitan area? It could mean that I look for a sensible, economical, gas-friendly sedan with low maintenance. Or, I could join the drones and get a luxury sedan or SUV.
The luxury SUV option is tempting (and I am sure will be liberating in a sense), but I battle the Beltway everyday with a long commute so good gas mileage is key. I am sure there are others out there with my same frivolous dilemma, which really amounts to the question, “To Be Bourgy or Not to Be” — that’s the real question. In my quest to make a decision, I recently came across the Essence article, “Black Woman’s Wealth Plan” in the September 2007 issue, which contained lots of great advise about creating wealth. I’m not sure getting a luxury car is part of that wealth plan, but I’ll blog about my decision when I get to the point.

Just a quick follow-up to The Secret…I wrote about the DVD back in April 2007 - The Secret. If you are into the law of attraction and remember seeing Lisa Nichols on Oprah with her vision board, check out this Web site called My Master Board that helps you create an electronic vision board. I have not tried this service, but I am just sharing. Of course, you can be like a third grader and get some magazines, scissors, and poster board and do the same…lol. Either way, I think vision boards can be powerful tools in envisioning success for your future.

Last week, the Prince George’s County Department of Housing and Community Development and WHUR 96.3 FM Radio hosted a foreclosure seminar for over 300 residents, called the “Protect Your Dream” workshop.
There has been widespread coverage of homeowners facing foreclosure locally and across the country. A recent Washington Post article cited more than 700 homes in foreclosure from April 2007 to June 2007 in Montgomery County, MD compared to only 49 during the same period last year. Prince George’s County, MD has more than 2,300 foreclosures for the year so far!
If you are not a homeowner yet or of you are looking into purchasing a new home, finding the right mortgage for your needs is extremely important as a first step to avoiding foreclosure.
A couple of area mortgage resources and programs:

I would be remiss if I didn’t include the long standing discussion about Prince George’s County, MD and its status as the wealthiest Black county in the U.S. I am homegrown and remember when the county started shifting focus on the apparent wealth of Black families living in Gorgeous Prince George’s. (Remember, don’t dare say “P.G.” we get sensitive about that.
)

Anyway, it’s hard for me to get excited about supposedly being the wealthiest Black county when we get constant negative media about crime and the school system, among other issues. There is a great column by the Washington Post’s Courtland Milloy from last Fall that references the November 2006 Ebony article on Prince George’s County’s wealth and touches on my point. I won’t relive Ebony’s “America’s Wealthiest Black County” article, but to the outside world you would think we all have yachts and indoor pools…that’s not the norm. I will say that the 4000+ square foot house and expensive cars are more common (in some parts of the county). You kind of forget when you live here that seeing 2007 Range Rovers on a regular basis is probably not the norm in the rest of the country. (More on that later…I am in the market for a car, but should I succumb to the Washington D.C. area peer pressure and get the luxury car?)
Anyway, I love my county and I am here for the count…trying to make it a better place. I just wonder about this so-called wealth. Some of us may have money, but are we creating generational wealth? I tell all my friends that The Millionaire Next Door (Stanley & Danko) shops at JcPenney’s.
My question: Have we have really arrived?

Prince George’s County’s bond rating has improved from Aa2 to Aa1, which is great news for the county because a higher rating will allow the county to get loans at lower interest rates. Also, a rating of Aa1 indicates that the county is in good financial standing.
For more information see this morning’s Washington Post - Prince George’s Extra and the news release on the Prince George’s County Government Web site.

Every professional woman should own the book, Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers by Lois P. Frankel. Her book helps women overcome and recognize many issues that keep us from succeeding in our professional lives. Some of the “mistakes” covered in the book range from being the office candy lady to something as seemingly simple as answering your phone only saying your first name. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it!

If you ever need a comprehensive book on networking, I highly recommend “The Secrets of Savvy Networking: How to Make the Best Connections for Business and Personal Success” by Susan RoAne. I have the audio version and RoAne covers everything from follow-up to business etiquette.
Also, RoAne’s book, “How to Work a Room, Revised Edition: Your Essential Guide to Savvy Socializing” just came out with a 2007 revised edition a couple of weeks ago.
