VOTE in Today’s Presidential Primary

February 12th, 2008 by PG Chic

I attended a family event this past weekend and it was interesting to listen to the elders engage in the great debate going on in our community…Clinton or Obama? The younger relatives (40 and under) were mostly vying for Obama, but the older relatives had mixed feelings. I heard everything from, “That Obama talks to much…” and “I like Obama, but can he win a general election” and “You know, that Hillary is no Bill Clinton.”

I loved listening to and chiming in on this presidential discussion with my immediate and extended family. In the air, there was and still is the strong feeling that regardless of what happens, history will be made. And, more importantly, we are a part of this history being made. Many of the elders in the room, were active participants in the Civil Rights movement from sit-ins to marches and more. They lived their history. I feel like our generation wants to make history and be part of something new. Something different. Something progressive. Change.

Please exercise your right to vote today. VOTE!

February 11th, 2008 by PG Chic

Along with the presidential democratic primary tomorrow (2/12), the highly visible local race is the 4th Congressional District rematch of Donna Edwards and incumbent Albert Wynn. Both candidates have endorsed Barack Obama.

The Gazette ran a few interesting articles last week that give background information and a key differences between the 4th District candidates. Also, there was coverage on PBS NOW a few weeks ago that goes into detail about the national attention of the 4th District race — progressives against conservative Democrats.

Please remember to vote tomorrow - Tuesday, February 12th!

Ebony Fashion Fair - Washington, D.C.

October 22nd, 2007 by PG Chic

I went to the Washington D.C. Ebony Fashion Fair sponsored by the Continental Societies, Inc. at the Kennedy Center on Sunday afternoon. Evidently, I need to get out of the house more because I had never heard of Continental Societies, Inc. From reading the Ebony Fashion Fair program guide, some of the latest honoraries include Dorothy Height (she was there BTW), Patti LaBelle, Allison Seymour (she can dress!) of WTTG FOX 5, and Michelle Cross Fenty (Mayor Adrian Fenty’s wife).

The fashion show was very entertaining. I have to admit that I have never been a big fashion show fan, but this experience has made me a changed woman. There were lots of fashions that could be worn by regular folk like me and you. Of course, there was a share of styles that probably look best on a runway. I have to give props to a local full-figure model Phonicial Washington from Waldorf, MD. There were also two other models from Washington D.C. Overall, I would go to the Ebony Fashion Fair in the future. There will be another show tonight at the Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD sponsored by Alpha Wives Club of Montgomery County.

Just wondering if anyone else caught the “Chevy Chic” ads promoting the new Bloomingdale’s in Chevy Chase,MD? The department store, which opened on 9/27 is the third Bloomingdale’s in the area (joining Tyson’s and White Flint) and the 40th store overall. It is located at 5300 Western Avenue and replaces the old Hecht’s.

Prince George’s County Housing Workshop

August 8th, 2007 by PG Chic

Last week, the Prince George’s County Department of Housing and Community Development and WHUR 96.3 FM Radio hosted a foreclosure seminar for over 300 residents, called the “Protect Your Dream” workshop.

There has been widespread coverage of homeowners facing foreclosure locally and across the country. A recent Washington Post article cited more than 700 homes in foreclosure from April 2007 to June 2007 in Montgomery County, MD compared to only 49 during the same period last year. Prince George’s County, MD has more than 2,300 foreclosures for the year so far!

If you are not a homeowner yet or of you are looking into purchasing a new home, finding the right mortgage for your needs is extremely important as a first step to avoiding foreclosure.

Lace Front Wigs in the Washington DC Area - Part 2

July 18th, 2007 by PG Chic

This post is an update to my June 19, 200 post, “Lace Front Wigs in the Washington DC Area” because the post has become so popular. Well, I have a little more information to share. If you are a hair stylist looking to find out how to put on a lace front wig, I have heard that the certified classes are close to $800. However, I also have heard that there are some pretty good instructional DVDs out there. Also, YouTube has several clips of applying lace front wigs. See below.

If you get weaves regularly and you don’t want to spring for the $1000 custom lace front wig, then try out a lace front frontal, which tightens up your front hairline for a fraction of the cost. Lastly, lace fronts have made their way to eBay already. I’m not sure how that works since the wigs are custom made. There are rumors of one-size-fits-all lace front wigs, which was just a matter of time. In my opinion, you get what you pay for!
