You always tell when I’m catching up on videos on VH1 Soul. So, I am into Chrisette Michele now. You may remember her from the hook on Jay-Z’s “Lost Ones” from his Kingdom Come album. Check out the video for “Be OK” –

A couple of months ago, I wrote a short post when Jill Scott’s “Hate On Me” single was released. Well, I purchased Jill Scott’s album “The Real Thing” a few weeks ago. I finally had a chance to really listen to it…I’m lovin’ it! Some of my favorites are”All I”, “My Love” (see new video below), “Wanna Be Loved”, and “Crown Royal”. Go ‘head Jilly from Philly!
See below video for “My Love” - the hook, “My love is deeper, tighter, sweeter, higher…”

Have you heard this song yet? “The D dot C” by Raina and Pharoah. The singers talk about local hot spots in Washington, D.C. and what really makes D.C. the “D dot C”. So, of course now we need somebody to make a song about the “P dot G dot”…lol.

I haven’t mentioned the outcome of the 50 Cent vs. Kanye West first-week-sales-battle (also known as big marketing stunt)…if you heard about it. Both hip-hop artists released albums on 9/11/07 and (as if there was any real competition) Kanye sold almost 1 million albums in the first week, beating 50 Cent’s album sales of around 500,000. During the months leading up to the album release date, 50 Cent said he would retire if Kanye outsold him. Please do…I hope he keeps his word! (lol) 50 just can’t compete lyrically or otherwise…sorry Boo.
See below some of my favs so far from Kanye’s Graduation (2007)… (other than “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”)

No, I’m not talking about the DC area mystery condiment included with your order of wings at the local Chinese carryout. I’m talking about the “new sound of DC” -a new gogo band called Mambo Sauce (Red C Records) that seems to be taking the Washington DC Metropolitan area by storm. Their ulimate goal is to really put DC gogo on the map nationally.
Last weekend, my younger sister asked me if I had ever heard of a music group called Mambo Sauce. Since I guess I’m officially old, the answer was obviously no, then I proceeded to ask her if it was a gogo band. Did I really have to ask? lol
Anyway, I saw Mambo Sauce perform “Miracles” at the Black Family Reunion last weekend (and later En Vouge minus Dawn…”Hold On!”). You should have seen the teenagers running down the National Mall…just imagine a New Edition concert. Once the “Miracles” song started, I realized that I heard part of it on the radio earlier that week. I always take more notice when I hear an original gogo song, as opposed to a cover of a song. You obviously won’t find me at the gogo (not trying to be the old head at the club…lol), but I am a music lover and support the art and creativity of local talent. A plus is that the single “Miracles” is positive and has a good message. From what I have heard so far, Mambo Sauce is a breath of fresh air.

I remember getting a forward about “Read a Book” within the past couple of months and I saw few of the lyrics and deleted the message. I figured it was some unfunny person’s attempt to be funny and the message appeared to be racist, so I decided not to waste my valuable time on foolishness. Now, low and behold, I find out that the animation associated with “Read a Book” has been playing on BET’s 106 and Park…what? How is that appropriate for that age group? I guess the point is that the cartoon is no more appropriate than the typical video that plays on BET (and other networks).
Anyway, a controversy has been brewing about the supposedly satirical “Read a Book” and the African American creators of the song and animation were recently on CNN defending their work. I refuse to link to the animation because of the language, but it you haven’t seen it, a quick search of “Read a Book” on YouTube or Google should do. Maybe I am officially old, but BET needs to make better choices for their programming. There is a Klan member somewhere out there applauding “Read a Book” and having a “Read a Book” party right now…thanks BET. First “Hot Ghetto Mess” and now this garbage. The execs at BET need to read a book…

I am not a fan of the “Cupid Shuffle” song by any means. In fact, I thought it was a broke down Sisqo from Dru Hill when I first heard this song earlier this summer. However, to be fair since I covered how to do the dance,“Crank That Soulja Boy” last week. I had to see how this Cupid Shuffle dance looked. Interesting…

So, I’m listening to the radio a few days ago and hear a song called “Crank That” by Soulja Boy, which based on the lyrics has a dance associated with it. First of all, if you’re over 25 (myself included), you probably have no business trying to do this complicated dance. However, I was curious about how the Soulja Boy dance looked so I Googled it. At least I won’t be caught off guard if this song is played the next time I make it to the club (so I can get out of the way)…lol.
Just for your viewing pleasure, check out the instructional video below (they look so serious!) and the music video. What happened to the snake and the wop? LOL. Let me find out this is the 2007 Electric Slide. Learn it, know it…just kidding. (Note: This dance has no barriers…check out these three girls “cranking that soulja boy”…hilarious.)
Unrelated - Soulja Boy’s accent is so country, but cute…lol.

Okay, I don’t agree with the words of the song and the video is typical, but I’m a sucker for a Dr. Dre beat. Listen to the instrumental below.
If you really want to see the video, check it out on Daily Motion.
