Just sharing a quick “I heard”…”

Have you heard about Mint Fitness Club? It is a fitness club and spa in Washington, D.C. I haven’t checked it out myself yet, but one of my girlfriends says it has a really nice atmosphere.

BTW - I should mention that D.C.’s spa week is coming up October 15 - 21. Mint Fitness Club does not appear to be on the participating list, but there are lots of other local participating spas (free login required).

Healthier Family Reunions for African Americans

September 3rd, 2007 by PG Chic

There was a great article last week in the Washington Post about new tactics that African Americans are using within their own family reunions to help combat many of the health issues that affect our community, like diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney failure. The article, “At Reunions, a Turn for the Healthier - To Reduce Risks, Some Black Families Trade Soul Food for Yoga and Veggies” (Washington Post, 08/28/2007) includes a reference to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) free booklet Family Reunion Health Guide (Physical Wellness | Add Comment »

Now That’s Hot: Zipfizz Liquid Shot Energy Supplement

August 29th, 2007 by PG Chic

I have been a fan of Red Bull energy drink since it came out a few years back. However, Red Bull has taken a back seat to my new energy fix Zipfizz. I randomly tried it a couple of weeks ago one sluggish afternoon at work in a nearby convenience store. I went in for Red Bull and left with Zipfizz Liquid Shot Energy Supplement. After I drank it, I read the label and realized that this product has 41,667% of Vitamin B12 daily value. No, that’s not a misprint, 41,667%! I read a few Zipfizz testimonials online (as well as their FAQs) and a few people said they think that’s the most B12 you could get from an energy drink, aside from getting more from a B12 injection. (Unrelated — I’ll have to write about the Gupta/B12 “diet plan” at some point in the near future.)

Anyway, as suspected, college students are all over Zipfizz (a.k.a. “B12 Crack”). It has caffeine in it, but minimal, and it doesn’t give you the coffee jitters. Try it if you need a boost for around 4-6 hours. (Not an endorsement, just my experience.) I’m already orchestrating getting a friend with a Costco membership to hook me up with a 24-pack box of Zipfizz!

Got AIDS? National HIV/AIDS Testing Day - June 27th

June 27th, 2007 by PG Chic

If you watched the red carpet show preceding the BET Awards last night, you may have seen up-and-coming actor Jimmy Jean Louis (known as The Haitian on the NBC series “Heroes”) wearing a black t-shirt with the words, “got AIDS?” Jimmy’s shirt reminded me that today is National HIV/AIDS Testing Day. In 2004, HIV infection was the number one cause of death for African American women ages 25-34. PG Chic encourages you to get tested to know your status.

Raw for 30 Days -All Organic Diet

May 11th, 2007 by PG Chic

Raw for 30 Days is a documentary that I heard about on the insight segment on WHUR 96.3 on the way home earlier this week. The film follows six Americans with Type 2 Adult Onset Diabetes, who stick to a “raw food” diet for 30 days. In some cases, the end result was a “cure” or reversal of the diabetes. The diet consists of 100% raw organic living foods, which sounds like a good way to eat anyway. It definitely sounds interesting enough to check out!

Note: There are trailers for the film in multiple formats on the Raw for 30 Days Web site.

Watch out Beyonce & Shakira! You’re not ready for Suhaila’s jelly…

A couple of weeks ago, I saw the bellydancer Suhaila Salimpour on The Ellen Degeneres Show doing glute exercises. I have been telling all of my girlfriends about the show because it looks like a good way to firm and tone your glutes! Not to mention that I couldn’t believe my eyes. The level of muscle control that this woman has is just crazy.

You have to see for yourself… someone recently posted the Ellen Suhaila clip on YouTube. The clip that Ellen referenced on the show is also on YouTube, “These Glutes Were Made for Walking” (this one is a bit “in-your-face”, so proceed to this link with caution).

If you’re like me and want the DVD, you can get it at Amazon. It’s called “Bellydance for Beginners with Suhaila: Fitness Fusion Buns”

Dropping it like it’s hot?

May 3rd, 2007 by PG Chic

I know…this post title is sooo three-years-ago, but I still like that song. Random thought: But why is “Drop it like it’s hot” a Wikipedia entry?

Anyway, I do have a point here, I guess a 2007 version of this post title would be what the kids are calling it now, “How to Raindance” or “Make it Rain.” Of course, I mean in the most respectful way…strip aerobics or exotic dancing exercise.

If you haven’t heard, there is an Xpose Fitness center near Arundel Mills and I hear that it is quite liberating. There are no mirrors and everyone is just there to exercise and have fun. There are pole dancing classes and I have heard there is a Black female instructor there who really knows her stuff. I think most of the instructors have dance backgrounds. Also, in the Bethesda and Alexandria, you can get “dance lessons” with the Art of Exotic Dancing. Sounds like fun for a bachelorette party!

Check it out and report back if there are others in the area. This sounds like good exercise and an interesting way to keep your significant other guessing!

What is Rolfing? Is it better than a deep tissue massage?

Email To Friend Email To Friend

May 2nd, 2007 by PG Chic

I am somewhat caught up on my Tivo list and finally watched Oprah’s Dr. Oz show from last week. I learned something new…the answer to the question, “What is Rolfing?”

More importantly, is it something that could help ease muscle tension moreso than a deep tissue massage. Sounds like the answer is yes! Dr. Oz offered to be Rolfed on-stage to show a demonstration of the technique. I am definitely a deep tissue massage type of a person, so this really peaked my interest. The concept was developed by Ida P. Rolf (1896-1979). Interestingly enough, the training to become a Rolfer can only be done at the Rolf Institute in Boulder, CA and it takes up to two years and quite a bit of money (to the tune of $10,000) to get certified.

I am interested enough to inquire further and see what Rolfers are available in the area. A list by city/state is searchable at The Rolf Institue’s Web site.

In the DC Metropolitan area, there appear to be a few Rolfers in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Silver Spring, Columbia, Fairfax, Reston, Arlington, Alexandria, and only a handful in the District of Columbia. I will plan to get “Rolfed” and report back here on my experience.
