Over the past several years, you may have subscribed to or have been forwarded messages from Bid Ed’s DC-Area listserv (see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dcarea/). It looks like he has been doing the listserv since 1999…has it been that long? Anyway, someone recently sent me a link to Urban Flavorz TV, which has several clips of nightlife in the Washington D.C. area and interviews of “hometown heroes” and professional athletes. The main host is none other than hometown comedian Lazee Lamont. I guess D.C. is the focus, but Lazee if you’re listening…you should come with your camera crew to some P.G. spots too. Represent Glenarden! lol

VOTE in Today’s Presidential Primary

Email To Friend Email To Friend

February 12th, 2008 by PG Chic

I attended a family event this past weekend and it was interesting to listen to the elders engage in the great debate going on in our community…Clinton or Obama? The younger relatives (40 and under) were mostly vying for Obama, but the older relatives had mixed feelings. I heard everything from, “That Obama talks to much…” and “I like Obama, but can he win a general election” and “You know, that Hillary is no Bill Clinton.”

I loved listening to and chiming in on this presidential discussion with my immediate and extended family. In the air, there was and still is the strong feeling that regardless of what happens, history will be made. And, more importantly, we are a part of this history being made. Many of the elders in the room, were active participants in the Civil Rights movement from sit-ins to marches and more. They lived their history. I feel like our generation wants to make history and be part of something new. Something different. Something progressive. Change.

Please exercise your right to vote today. VOTE!

If you haven’t already, consider donating to the Washington D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Monument Campaign. I heard a representative from the “Build the Dream” Campaign on the radio this week and it sounds like $80 million has been raised so far with a total goal of $100 million

Random Thought: Remember the Del Walters ABC/WJLA Channel 7 Investigative Report about Go-Go Pool Parties? (Early 90’s)

December 12th, 2007 by PG Chic

If you grew up in the Washington DC area, you should remember the go-go pool party scandal exposed on channel 7 ABC/WJLA news by Del Walters with the I-Team. I have to share the thought process that resulted in this completely random memory today. For some reason, the name “Trina Boo” came up in conversation with a friend…and Karrine Steffens was mentioned shortly thereafter (I’ll let other area bloggers fill you in on “Trina Boo” and other infamous go-go dancers), which brought up late 80’s and 90’s go-go and reminded me of the Northeast Groovers and Rare Essence pool party scandals.

I remember seeing the 1994 Del Walters news coverage of this story. I also remember that Del was on Oprah talking about the scandal. Del should come back to do a “Where are they now?” special report…lol. I can’t believe that was nearly 15 years ago. It has only gotten worse with many mainstream music videos being just as demeaning. Anyway, the story was interesting back then and still is to a certain extent. Someone actually posted the original news coverage from channel 7 on YouTube. Check it out and watch comments from the late C. Delores Tucker during the broadcast about the go-go pool party scandal.

Ebony Fashion Fair - Washington, D.C.

October 22nd, 2007 by PG Chic

I went to the Washington D.C. Ebony Fashion Fair sponsored by the Continental Societies, Inc. at the Kennedy Center on Sunday afternoon. Evidently, I need to get out of the house more because I had never heard of Continental Societies, Inc. From reading the Ebony Fashion Fair program guide, some of the latest honoraries include Dorothy Height (she was there BTW), Patti LaBelle, Allison Seymour (she can dress!) of WTTG FOX 5, and Michelle Cross Fenty (Mayor Adrian Fenty’s wife).

The fashion show was very entertaining. I have to admit that I have never been a big fashion show fan, but this experience has made me a changed woman. There were lots of fashions that could be worn by regular folk like me and you. Of course, there was a share of styles that probably look best on a runway. I have to give props to a local full-figure model Phonicial Washington from Waldorf, MD. There were also two other models from Washington D.C. Overall, I would go to the Ebony Fashion Fair in the future. There will be another show tonight at the Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD sponsored by Alpha Wives Club of Montgomery County.

Have you heard this song yet? “The D dot C” by Raina and Pharoah. The singers talk about local hot spots in Washington, D.C. and what really makes D.C. the “D dot C”. So, of course now we need somebody to make a song about the “P dot G dot”…lol.

Ride the Boomerang

October 6th, 2007 by PG Chic

If you’re up to letting loose, I just heard about a recent girls-night-out bachelorette party on the Ride the Boomerang bus (complete with stripper pole and pumping music) that goes to several hot spots around Washington, D.C. From the description, it sounded like a blast from college days past. (Clarification–I went to Maryland, so my memories are of sorority girls throwing up on the late night UM Shuttle…maybe the HBCU experience was different or maybe not…lol.)

Anyway, I told my friend that I might be too grown and sexy (a.k.a. PG chic) for the Boomerang bus, but I’m not hatin’ on the younger and/or free spirits who would enjoy this party bus. Look at it this way, most of the people probably won’t remember the bus ride. Plus, you don’t need a designated driver, right?

BTW - I have shared before about area exotic dance lessons as another good bachelorette party idea.

Just sharing a quick “I heard”…”

Have you heard about Mint Fitness Club? It is a fitness club and spa in Washington, D.C. I haven’t checked it out myself yet, but one of my girlfriends says it has a really nice atmosphere.

BTW - I should mention that D.C.’s spa week is coming up October 15 - 21. Mint Fitness Club does not appear to be on the participating list, but there are lots of other local participating spas (free login required).
